STEM Initiatives for Young People
How do you measure fascination?
ZEISS is breaking new ground to motivate young people to take up science and STEM careers (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). True to the slogan “Inspire and share knowledge”, ZEISS staff take part in different initiatives: They make sure that there will always be smart minds taking smart decisions who will embark on a combined technical and scientific career path.
What does it take to inspire young people to look into research and development? ZEISS has initiated programs specifically for that purpose and garnered the support of established competitions. The result: Just the right mix of theory and practice that arouses the younger generation’s curiosity for STEM careers.
A Heart for Science
On the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the company, ZEISS has launched the international initiative “A Heart for Science”: Its aim is to carry out numerous projects with pupils in junior and senior high schools to encourage them to pursue a career as researchers and scientists. The initiative combines existing projects and facilitates new projects. Dedicated ZEISS employees share their experience in various projects – be it in school labs, during STEM workshops or at museum events.
Cutting-edge technology you can touch
Best example of promoting innovative learning opportunities locally: ZEISS supports the knowledge center “Eule” in Schwäbisch Gmünd/Germany with a donation of 30,000 euros. In this way, the company, together with partners from the region, aims to get young people excited about science and technology. “The partnership with ZEISS enables us to expand practical courses in the field of optics and get young people excited about these systems,” says Michael Nanz, Managing Director of the center. “Eule” is a European lighthouse project funded by grants from the EU and the state of Baden-Württemberg. It offers children, teenagers and young adults application-oriented projects in computer science, natural sciences and technology outside of school lessons.
